Guernica in 3D

This is the week the packing starts in earnest, but I needed to put this up, via Biomes. It's a 3D tour of Picasso's painting Guernica, a painting I first saw as the cover for a social studies textbook when I was in school, an image that so captivated me I went to find out what I could about it.

The tour does an excellent job of opening up a dense work, especially for people who can't wrap their heads around Picasso's style. And while it would have been nice to pause on each element and take time to explain it, the music is perhaps a more aesthetically pleasing choice.

Enough Already

I'm of the mind that options be available to women so that they know that abortion does not have to be the answer, but as far as I'm concerned women have the right to make that decision for themselves and that that right should be enshrined in law. Therefore, I was pleased to hear that Henry Morgentaler had been awarded the Order of Canada. I was also not surprised that the decision created such a fuss.

But most of all I'm amused, especially by the reaction of Lucien Larré, the Catholic priest who has returned his OC. He was, amusingly, the same priest who was in trouble with the law some years ago. Last week Global Vancouver had him on their morning news show and the two anchors really seemed to be fawning over him as he talked about his decision to return the honour. No mention of his criminal past, and, when he mentioned that something like 75% of Canadians opposed abortion (really truly, he did say that), neither of them called him on this statistic, which, as best as I could tell, was pulled out of his ass and deposited in s steaming pile on the desk.

Of course, 65% of Canadians support the award, which is not quite the same as 25%, and indeed, the Globe and Mail article quoted in the paragraph above has the priest revising his numbers to "maybe forty percent of Canadians." Or, actually, maybe 35%, although I wonder if perhaps some pro choice people wonder if the fuss was worth it.

The noise, I hope, will die down soon, and then the lot of us can obsess about something else.

The Happiest You Can Be Watching Something on the Web (Aside From Something With Puppies)

Where the Hell is Matt? is a video that shows that sometimes companies can agree to supporting things without looking self-serving and crass. This is the second version, and I believe the best. Be sure to poke around the site for more info on the video, on Matt, and on that dog in Kuwait. And then watch it again so you can discover more wonder.

Also, if the video is jumpy, shut off the HD option. The picture will still be pretty darn good.

Added later: This interesting article about Palbasha Siddique, the singer of "Praan," the song that accompanies the video. A song I downloaded today, incidentally.
