Michael Bishop, author and, more important, friend, has lost his son. Jamie Bishop was a German prof at Virginia Tech, and it has been confirmed that he was one of the victims in today's shooting tragedy.

Damn, damn, damn. Michael Bishop is one of the sweetest human beings I've ever met, and this breaks my heart. I can't think of anything worse than losing a child, except losing a child to senseless violence.
