Enough Already

I'm of the mind that options be available to women so that they know that abortion does not have to be the answer, but as far as I'm concerned women have the right to make that decision for themselves and that that right should be enshrined in law. Therefore, I was pleased to hear that Henry Morgentaler had been awarded the Order of Canada. I was also not surprised that the decision created such a fuss.

But most of all I'm amused, especially by the reaction of Lucien Larré, the Catholic priest who has returned his OC. He was, amusingly, the same priest who was in trouble with the law some years ago. Last week Global Vancouver had him on their morning news show and the two anchors really seemed to be fawning over him as he talked about his decision to return the honour. No mention of his criminal past, and, when he mentioned that something like 75% of Canadians opposed abortion (really truly, he did say that), neither of them called him on this statistic, which, as best as I could tell, was pulled out of his ass and deposited in s steaming pile on the desk.

Of course, 65% of Canadians support the award, which is not quite the same as 25%, and indeed, the Globe and Mail article quoted in the paragraph above has the priest revising his numbers to "maybe forty percent of Canadians." Or, actually, maybe 35%, although I wonder if perhaps some pro choice people wonder if the fuss was worth it.

The noise, I hope, will die down soon, and then the lot of us can obsess about something else.
